For the past 19 years, ex-felon Susan Burton has helped female parolees rebuild their lives after a prison guard told her, “I’ll see you back in a little while.” Susan Burton met her Long Beach sister, LaRonda Burton, for the first time on a prison yard while both were incarcerated. LaRonda Burton and others are organizers of the Long BeachRecovery Awards. The Recovery Awards recognize persons who had fallen to substance abuse but have transformed their lives and currently practicing good citizenship. Each year honorees are presented certificates from Sixth District Council member Dee Andrews and Congress member Alan Lowenthal.
