Joopoong Kim Bio
Dr. Joopoong Kim leads a dynamic career as a music composer and as an educator. Born in 1958, Dr. Kim began his studies at the Hanyang University in Seoul, Korea where he earned his Bachelor of Music in music composition in 1982 and Master’s in Music Composition Theory in 1990. Dr. Kim continued his graduate education in the United States where Dr. Kim received his doctoral degree in music composition at the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 1998. During his graduate education in the United States, Dr. Kim had the opportunity to learn from and collaborate with some of the leading experts in the field of electronic music composition, including the late Gerald Kemner, James Mobberley, and Paul Ruddy.
Since his return to Korea in 1999, Dr. Kim has become a renowned and active member of the electronic digital music composition field. For over 20 years as a professor of music, Dr. Kim has lectured and mentored numerous students extensively to help guide the next generation of Korean composers emerge onto the world stage. Dr. Kim presently serves as the dean of the Department of Global Music of Kyonggi University’s graduate school in Seoul.
In addition to his impressive career as a musician and professor, Dr. Kim serves as the President of Vision-C (an association of music composers and artists) and Vice Chairman of Korean Composers Association (the primary association of composers in Korea), in addition to maintaining his status as an active member of various other music associations. In these capacities, Dr. Kim takes pride in practicing and helping the development of modern music composition in both Korea and abroad.
