We had extended conversations about categories of music. Growing up in Chicago, his first heroes were jazz artists such as Duke Ellington and Art Tatum. Ed Bland happened to hear a recording of Stravinsky&#8217;s Rite of Spring and sought to compose in newer and larger forms while maintaining the life and vitality of jazz. In 1979 Bland composed PIECE FOR CHAMBER ORCHESTRA.
