One impactful moment was through the Peabody award-winning, 26-part radio series,\u00a0\u201cWade in the Water: African American Sacred Music Traditions.\u201d For the 25<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary, the series is available on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=726103231\">NPR One\u00a0<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lesser known fact is that Howard University also loomed large\u00a0in\u00a0this groundbreaking, widely distributed and\u00a0enthusiastically received production,\u201d\u00a0<strong>said Senior Producer Judi Moore Latta and Associate Producer\u00a0Sonja Williams.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/about-npr\/734342677\/wade-in-the-water-celebrates-its-25th-anniversary\">According to the\u00a0 NPR press release<\/a>, the series\u00a0is being re-released on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=726103231\">NPR One\u00a0<\/a>and originally aired in 1994 as a first-time partnership between NPR and the Smithsonian Institution. The Peabody Award-winning series documents the history and impact of Black American music through sacred song, storytelling, and historical analysis. In\u00a0the\u00a0first episode, host\u00a0<strong>Bernice Johnson Reagon\u00a0<\/strong>noted that for African Americans, sacred music and &#8220;church was like food, nourishment for the spirit or the soul.&#8221; Through archival and live performances recorded just for the series,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/series\/726103231\/wade-in-the-water\">Wade in the Water\u00a0<\/a>preserves the art, wisdom, and faith of a people whose musical traditions, including spirituals, lined hymns, quartets, and gospels.<\/p>\n<p>The series is hosted by Reagon, the conceptual producer, who is a historian, artist, and Howard alumna whom received her Ph.D.\u00a0in\u00a0history.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16035\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a class=\"dt-pswp-item\" href=\"http:\/\/musicuntold.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/wade-in-water-images.jpg\" data-dt-img-description=\"\" data-large_image_width=\"400\" data-large_image_height=\"225\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16035\" class=\"wp-image-16035 \" src=\"http:\/\/musicuntold.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/wade-in-water-images.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"370\" height=\"177\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16035\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wade In The Water &#8211; Episode 1<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Moore Latta and Williams\u00a0are professors in Howard University\u2019s Cathy Hughes School of Communications. They were joined by Howard University alumni, then student interns, TaJuan Mercer, Michael Johnson and Larry Shields, who played integral roles in the production.\u00a0Additionally, executive producer and alumna Sandra Rattley along with fellow alumni and production assistants Njemille Jones,\u00a0Joseph Gill, Dackeyia Simmons Sterling and Beverly Oliver, joined the production.<\/p>\n<p>The musical production included the Howard University Concert Choir and alumnus Richard Smallwood and the Richard Smallwood Singers were featured performers in this multiple award-winning production.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Kehembe V.
